The woodland garden is home to our collection of shade-loving plants from around the world, including many North American natives and their Asian cousins. The shady garden is held together by bold-leaved Asian plants, among them, Rodgersia, Astilboides and Hosta. These are accented by large woodland ferns and the glossy-leaved european gingerwhich has re-seeded throughout the gardens.
The woodland is mulched by leaf drop from the oaks, maples and birchs and by an occasional side dressing of shredded leaves and organic fertilizer. To offset the drying effect of the tree root competition, the woodland garden is frequently watered overnight by overhead sprinklers.
The woodland is at the height of bloom in May but it is a cool and inviting place to visit throughout the summer months.
