LARCH   IN  AUTUMN

The cultivated forms of Larix decidua and Larix kaempferi can be relied on to make a strong show of color in late October and early November, after the broadleaf trees have dropped their leaves. However, the larch display does not follow a consistent pattern from year to year. When we have had plenty of rain and some good hard frosts, the colors are at their best, and then we are treated to a magnificent show for a full two weeks. On overcast days, the colors are rich and muted. On sunny days, the oranges and yellows are fantastically illuminated.
