Hosta are invaluable for their bold foliage and for the visual anchor they afford to shady gardens. The indistinct formlessness of many herbaceous plants is given visual meaning by clumps of broad, bold leaves. Hosta are at their best in rich soil, in dappled shade, but we keep nudging them out into more sunny places where they sometimes thrive and sometimes disappoint.
Our catalog lists some 130 carefully chosen varieties. Our aim is to keep this number more or less constant and to continue to improve our collection by gradually replacing older varieties with new garden-worthy introductions. We have no intention of pursuing the cutting edge of the Hosta world which, in our opinion, touts many plants of dubious value.
The photos here represent a handful of our favorite plants.
